SPSC Statement
6 November 2024
Supporters of Palestinian and human rights in the United States have faced a stark choice between two genocide enablers. Harris has shown no sign of breaking from the Genocide Joe mould, repeatedly stating her support for Israel, and failing to commit to anything beyond tired platitudes about too much suffering. Trump’s record speaks for himself – the shifting of the U.S embassy to Al-Quds being perhaps the most memorable of demonstrations of support for the Zionist project.
U.S voters went to the polls knowing that whatever the outcome they would wake up to the news of a new President about to swear their allegiance to Israel and ready to sign-off on the next shipment of F-15 jets and tank cartridges. The feeling might be familiar to some UK voters who earlier in the year faced the choice between a Labour party which has purged many of its pro-Palestine and anti-Zionist members and clambered to proclaim Israel’s right to defend itself and withhold water from besieged Palestinians in Gaza, and the Tories.
If we didn’t know already, then it should be clear by now: the leaders of the “Free World” will not make the right choices. Due to its imperial, colonial and racist past, support for Israel and dismissal of the Palestinian cause is built into the DNA of the West, particularly the UK and U.S. Elections and lobbying are not going to shift the needle on the establishment’s cast iron support for Israel’s settler colonial project.
Instead, we must continue building a global, grassroots solidarity movement with enough power to make defence and support of Israel untenable, and that stands unconditionally for freedom, equality and justice for the Palestinian people. We must build support for the liberation of Palestine on our high streets, schools, hospitals, trade union branches, and in our churches, mosques and synagogues. And we must take inspiration and learn from current and past struggles to energise and intensify solidarity actions focused on boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) to isolate the state of Israel. We will continue to work in solidarity with the Palestinian people, resolutely against racism, fascism and Zionism.,
