Scottish Palestine Solidarity Campaign (SPSC) welcomes the latest moves within the Scottish Trade Union movement towards deepening solidarity with Palestine.
At the weekend delegates at the Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) Disabled Workers’ Conference debated the impact of the Israeli genocide on disability in Palestine. The unparalleled scale of disabling attacks on the Palestinian people and disproportionate vulnerability of the disabled were noted. Subsequently the conference voted to adopt a strong Emergency Motion brought to the floor by Aberdeen Trades Union Council, which includes practical solidarity actions.
These include writing to the First Minister and Prime Minister highlighting Israel's deliberate and systematic disabling attacks on Palestinian workers, demanding action be taken to bring this barbarity to an end.
Calling for an end to UK and Scottish Government complicity in Israeli war crimes and crimes against humanity, including an end to all arms sales.
Working with the STUC General Council and affiliates to encourage effective support for Palestinian disabled workers, including through Boycott Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) and by endorsing Apartheid Free Zones (AFZ).
Delegates also voted to encourage affiliated unions, branches and individuals to affiliate to the Scottish Palestine Solidarity Campaign, and to support workers who refuse to build, handle and transport weapons destined for Israel.
This move follows the STUC Black Workers’, and Women’s Conferences which both took similar positions earlier this year. This illustrates the growing understanding within the equalities stream of the Palestinian struggle as being one fundamentally for freedom, justice and equality.
SPSC looks forward to working with the Scottish Trade Union movement on enacting the effective solidarity action called for.
