PALESTINE GROUP HOSTS OUTSPOKEN ISRAELI JOURNALIST
An outspoken Israeli journalist will speak in Edinburgh on Wednesday as part of a Scottish speaking tour organised by a pro-Palestine group.
Gideon Levy will discuss his latest book, The Punishment of Gaza, at St Georges West church in Shandwich Place (7.30pm), and will be joined on stage by Palestinian Scot, Khaled Al Awasi, from Hebron in the West Bank.
The Scottish Palestine Solidarity Campaign (SPSC) have also organised an exhibition of Gazan children’s art, put together by acclaimed artist, Rod Cox. The “Loss of Innocence” exhibition can be viewed in Edinburgh on Wednesday between 12noon and 7pm at the Coates Crescent venue, with a guided tour by the artist at 5.30pm.
Both events are open to the public and entry is free.

3. Gideon Levy is a journalist with the Israeli newspaper, Haaretz.
His latest book is entitled The Punishment of Gaza, and is published by Verso.

From 2005—the year of Gaza’s “liberation” —through to 2009, he tracks Israel’s abandonment of the pretense of diplomacy in favor of a policy of provocation and raw military power, with the ultimate aim of denying Palestinians any chance of forming their own independent state. Punished by Israel and the Quartet of international powers for the democratic election of Hamas, Gaza has been transformed into the world’s largest open-air prison. From Gazan families struggling to cope with the random violence of Israel’s blockade and its “targeted” assassinations, to the machinations of legal experts and the continued connivance of the international community, every aspect of this ongoing tragedy is eloquently recorded and forensically analyzed.
4. Khaled Al Awasi is a Palestinian Scot whose brother, Ali, was part of the Gaza Freedom Flotilla attacked by Israeli troops on May 31st 2010. Nine Turkish human rights activists were killed.
5. The exhibition of Gazan children’s art is entitled: Loss of Innocence, and is compiled by acclaimed artist, Rod Cox, and sponsored by UNESCO.

The Exhibition comprises about 50 pictures, drawn, painted or crayoned by children in Gaza, some immediately after, or even during the Assault by Israel on Gaza over the New Year 2008/9, and some drawn a little later. The later pictures were either drawn as part of a programme of Psycho-Social Help for the Traumatised Children, or by children who were specifically asked by me to set out their feelings for the benefit of Westerners understanding.
