Another Scottish City Council joins international condemnation of Israeli Government

On Monday the 13th of June Dundee City Council will vote on a motion calling on the City Council to add its voice to the growing international condemnation of the Israeli Government's continued disregard of UN resolutions and its continued failure to comply with the requirements of the Geneva Conventions.

The motion, which has been submitted by Councillor Fraser Macpherson on behalf of the SPSC Dundee branch, falls short of our original aims. The planned motion had called for a total boycott of Israeli goods. However the Council's legal officers, non-elected officers, blocked this by insisting that it is never legal to Boycott anybody. This despite the wording of the motion being very similar to those already passed by the legal officers of West Dunbartonshire and Stirling councils. SPSC Dundee believes that Council policy should not be dictated by, or debate silenced by non-elected officers who supposedly hold no political affiliations and still hope that a vote will be taken on boycott.Councillor Macpherson is already coming under attack for his stance, not least from the Israeli embassy in London.

SPSC Dundee urges messages of support to Councillor Macpherson at:

You can send messages urging other members of the Council to support the motion. Send your note or letter, headed 'Dear Councillor', to dundee@scottishpsc.org.uk for forwarding.
