  • Vanunu is the elected Rector of Glasgow University
  • sentenced to a fresh prison term by an Israeli court for “speaking to foreigners”
  • 1986 - kidnapped from Rome after revealing Israel’s nuclear arsenal to the London Times
  • during trial he was not allowed to see much of the evidence against him
  • jailed for 18 years, first 11 in solitary
  • guards not allowed to talk to him or be seen by him
  • in the prison yard guards carride a portable structure to prevent him seeing anyone = torture
  • Vanunu has given interviews to Scottish newspapers & talked with many Scots in Jerusalem
  • Vanunu has been adopted by Amnesty & nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize by Desmond Tutu
  • Israel claims it is keeping Vanunu because he still holds information that is a security threat.
  • the idea is ridiculous because
    • the passage of 22 years renders his knowledge obsolete
    • many Scots and others have met with him many times; he has had ample time to tell us any supposed ‘secrets’
    • Vanunu told everything to the Sunday Times
  • Vanunu has served his sentence in full
  • should be allowed to leave Israel - this is all he wants
  • support his human rights to travel freely
  • support the rights of Glasgow University students to communicate freely with their elected Rector
  • sizeable majority of Scottish Parliament and Scottish Government have declared their support for Vanunu
