Jimmy Reid Foundation: Opportunities for Solidarity with the Palestinian Liberation Struggle

The Jimmy Reid Foundation 2025 Annual Lecture: Deepening Solidarity with Palestine: The Jimmy Reid Foundation (JRF), a Scottish think tank rooted in the values of economic, environmental, political, and social justice, continues to build on the legacy of legendary trade unionist and activist Jimmy Reid. Best known for leading the historic Upper Clyde Shipbuilders' "work-in," Reid’s legacy lives on in campaigns for equity and international solidarity.

In this spirit, the Foundation’s 2025 Annual Lecture was delivered by Professor Ghassan Abu-Sittah, Palestinian plastic and reconstructive surgeon and the current Rector of the University of Glasgow. Professor Abu-Sittah’s work and advocacy have become symbolic of resistance and humanitarian commitment in the face of global injustice.
At the event, the SPSC Trade Union Group and the Jimmy Reid Foundation jointly launched a new publication exploring key themes and opportunities for strengthening Scottish trade union solidarity with Palestine. This collaborative work marks a renewed commitment to internationalism and shared struggles for dignity, rights, and justice.

Together, these efforts honour Jimmy Reid’s legacy by standing with oppressed peoples and reinforcing the enduring connection between Scottish labour movements and global solidarity.
