Home Bargains is an ambitious company aiming to expand from its current 600 stores to 1,000 stores nationwide. They also stock a large number of products made in Israel. For Tom Morris, the owner of Home Bargains, sales and profits have soared; Morris paid himself £1.22bn in 2024. Morris has a record of contributions to charity and claims to care about communities that are struggling. If that is the case, then he, and his company, should care that when a whole people are treated with such inhumanity and brutality, and when children are being burned to death or dying of starvation, the company must take steps to cut ties with the apartheid and genocidal state of Israel.
The International Court of Justice is investigating Israel for genocide against the Palestinian people in Gaza. The Genocide Convention does not explicitly exclude corporate liability for complicity in genocide. Corporations can be held liable for aiding, abetting, or contributing to genocidal acts.
Israel’s violations of Palestinian rights are not restricted to Gaza; they are violating the rights of Palestinian citizens of Israel and have escalated land theft and the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians in Jerusalem and the West Bank, illegally occupied according to international law. Companies have a responsibility to cease any activity or cut financial ties that could contribute directly or indirectly to ongoing crimes committed by the Israeli authorities.
