The Jerusalem Quartet was founded in October 1993 within the framework of the Young Musicians' Group under the auspices of the Jerusalem Music Centre and the America Israel Cultural Foundation (AICF), and in cooperation with the Conservatory of the Jerusalem Rubin Academy of Music and Dance. The Quartet held its premiere at the Jerusalem Music Centre, performing amongst other works Michael Wolpe's Allegro for String Quartet, written especially for them and featured on this CD.
The Jerusalem Quartet was founded in October 1993 within the framework of the Young Musicians' Group under the auspices of the Jerusalem Music Centre and the America Israel Cultural Foundation (AICF), and in cooperation with the Conservatory of the Jerusalem Rubin Academy of Music and Dance. The Quartet held its premiere at the Jerusalem Music Centre, performing amongst other works Michael Wolpe's Allegro for String Quartet, written especially for them and featured on this CD.
Since then, the Quartet has been busy playing concerts in Israel and abroad, including a concert in Amman at the residence of Israel's ambassador to Jordan; the Israeli premiere of 12 Microludes by Gyorgy Kurtag in the presence of the composer; a European concert tour sponsored by the Israel Foreign Ministry featuring concerts in Oslo, Stockholm, Vienna, The Hague, Copenhagen, and Bratislavia; a concert tour to South Africa under the auspices of the America-Israel Cultural Foundation; a festive concert at Stephanie Hall in Graz, Austria on the occasion of the 200th Anniversary of Schubert's birth.
The Quartet, in addition to the careful, highly professional and artistic guidance of Avi Abramovich, has been participating regularly in master-classes and courses with some of the most renowned musicians such as Isaac Stern, Tabea Zimmermann, Gyorgy Kurtag, Michael Tree, Henry Meyer, and members of the Amadeus Quartet. Prizes include: special prize as guests of the Forum Musical International de Nomandie; first prize at the Jerusalem Chamber Music Competition; first prize and prize for the best interpretation of the 20th century music at the Franz Schubert and the Music of the 20th Century Competition in Graz, Austria. The four members of the Quartet joined the Israeli Defense Forces in March 1997 and are serving as Distinguished Musicians.
