 ABERDEEN COUNCIL REBUFFS ATTEMPT TO STOP BDS ACTIVITIES
On this day in 2016, a motion to Aberdeen City Council attempting to silence criticism of Israel was debated at a meeting of the full Council and defeated by 32 votes to 9. The joint proposers directly linked the anti-BDS motion to current BDS activity in Aberdeen, specifically the then-ongoing and ultimately successful campaign by SPSC Aberdeen Branch against the Israeli Jericho Dead Sea Cosmetics stall in Union Square. Portraying boycott calls against an Israeli company as driven by hostility to Jews did not succeed.

Sustained campaigns in Glasgow, Dundee, Edinburgh and Aberdeen resulted in the closure of all the Dead Sea cosmetics stalls in shopping centres across Scotland. The Israeli company was selling products derived from minerals extracted from the Dead Sea. Israel has many such Dead Sea companies, many operating from illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank. The Israeli Dead Sea industry is thriving, while Palestinians are denied access to their own Dead Sea resources, a situation enforced by Israel’s illegal military occupation of the West Bank.

The Palestinian BNC is calling for boycott of institutions linked to the Israeli State and its crimes against the Palestinian people. It does not target Israelis as a group. Like all BDS campaigns, SPSC works with Israelis who support equal rights for Palestinians.

The pro-Israel squad enjoy access to vast financial resources, mainstream media and politicians as they work internationally to close down spaces for pro-Palestine advocacy. But the fightback is winning victories here, here,
