PRIME MINISTERS PLEDGE 'SECURITY' COOPERATION On this day in 2019, UK Prime Minister Johnson met Netanyahu in Downing Street. “The two leaders confirmed their commitment to a strong UK-Israel relationship, including through trade, cooperation on intelligence and security.” Johnson has called himself “a passionate Zionist”. On the Balfour Declaration centenary he wrote, while Israel was killing 34 Palestinians in Gaza, that during six weeks in 1984 working in a kibbutz kitchen, he saw “the miracle of Israel…self-reliance, a remarkable country.”

One hundred years after Britain’s Foreign Secretary Arthur Balfour issued the Balfour Declaration, his successor Boris Johnson told a celebratory meeting that that he recognised,
“the magic, the genius and miracle of Israel...The Balfour Declaration, whatever its defects, whatever its unfulfilled nature, paved the way for one of the greatest political triumphs of the 20th century, the creation of the State of Israel, which, after all is a democracy, a liberal society, a beacon of hope and which shares the values in which I passionately believe. This is an amazing achievement by humanity.”
