UK PUBLISHER BANS MEETING ON FREE SPEECH
On this day in 2019, Brighton Waterstones abruptly cancelled their hosting of a book launch by academics examining anti-Semitism allegations against the Labour Party. The cancellation of the event near the Labour Party’s conference venue in Brighton followed a campaign of threats by pro-Israel supporters. With no sense of irony, Waterstones thus cancelled a meeting called to discuss issues of the suppression of free speech. Threats led two other Brighton venues to cancel meetings by Chris Williamson MP.
