US LEAKS SADISTIC ISRAELI PLAN
On this day in 2008, a cable was sent from the US Embassy in Israel, later published by Wikileaks: "As part of their overall embargo plan against Gaza, Israeli officials have confirmed to (U.S. embassy economic officers) on multiple occasions that they intend to keep the Gazan economy on the brink of collapse without quite pushing it over the edge...functioning at the lowest level possible consistent with avoiding a humanitarian crisis". One cable, dated Nov. 3, 2008, states that "Israel has designated Gaza as a 'hostile entity,' and maintained an economic embargo against the territory. Under this designation, decisions on...the territory's economy in general are treated...as security matters."
Palestinians say [ie, it's only a Palestinian claim] impoverished Gaza remains effectively a "prison" sealed off by Israel, and have called for an opening to allow normal trade and other links with the world, Reuters reports".
Seven weeks after the US Embassy cable was sent, Israeli troops, warships and aircraft massacred over 1,400 Palestinians in an attack against a virtually defenceless population. A report by UN inquiry team, "Human Rights in Palestine and Other Occupied Arab Territories: Report of the United Nations Fact Finding Mission on the Gaza Conflict", concluded that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) committed war crimes and possibly crimes against humanity.
