They Demolish Our Houses While We Build Theirs
Andrew Ross is speaking at meetings across Scotland on his latest book,
Stone Men: the Palestinians who Built Israel.
The main content of Stone Men comes from interviews with Palestinian building workers across Palestine/Israel, in the reporting and analysis of which, Omar Barghouti, a founder of the Palestinian BDS movement, writes that
"Ross takes us on a journey of human stories, ethical arguments, and socio-economic realities, consciously refraining from speaking on behalf of Palestinians or depicting us as pitiful victims, as many well-meaning white academics still do, and thus contributing to an understanding of what justice in this land truly means.
“Andrew Ross sheds a brilliant light on what he calls the ‘sweat equity’ of Palestinian labourers who were deprived by Israel’s system of occupation and apartheid of their land and livelihood and pushed as a result to build Israeli housing and infrastructure to survive and to resist ethnic cleansing."
Stone Men is about the lives and struggles of Palestinian construction workers under military occupation in the West Bank or as second class citizens on the other side of the Green Line.
Scottish trade unions have a policy of general boycott of the State of Israel and trade union activists and socialists have a special interest in the Palestinian working class within the overall national struggle for freedom.

Andre
w Ross used to work on Scottish oil rigs and building sites. He is now Professor of Social and Cultural Analysis at New York University and a contributor to the Nation, Jacobin, New York Times.
