June 2010: No fundraising for ethnic cleansing – Protest the JNF golf game in Bonnyton!
Report of Event
Tuesday 22 June 2010, Bonnyton Golf Club, nr Glasgow
Twenty five protestors watched empty fairways for much of the time yesterday at the annual JNF pro-am golf fundraiser at Bonnyton Golf Club, near Glasgow. Numbers participating in the JNF fundraiser were substantially down on previous years, thirty two teams participating this year compared to forty seven in 2009.
Asked to participate in a charity event, most of us do not look very closely at a body that calls itself a charity. Clearly, many of those who agreed to help out the JNF in previous years declined this year's invitation as result of two factors. The first, obviously, is the increasing awareness of Israel’s brutal siege of Gaza, revulsion at the most recent massacres, and the general swing in public opinion against Israeli atrocity.
At Bonnyton, in addition, it is clear that the cumulative effect of the protests by Scottish PSC at every annual JNF fundraiser has also prompted many previous participants to stay away. One golf professional tells us that many teams stayed away as a result of a rethink after coming face to face with protestors at the first hole year after year.
