The ‘Palestine Papers’
The rottenness and corruption of the pro-Western ex-dictatorship in Tunisia has been exposed for all to see. Today's leaks show that the Palestinian Authority has plumbed the same depths of collaboration with a pro-Western regime to oppress, imprison and violate an entire people. The PA is revealed completely capitulating to Israel and the US, willing to betray the aspirations of the Palestinian people, overwhelmingly a refugee people, to return to the areas from where they were ethnically cleansed in 1948, in 1967 and every day since then. The further revelation that the PA offered Jerusalem to the Zionists completes the descent into moral and political bankruptcy.None of this comes as a surprise to those who recall the Abu Mazen's readiness to suppress the Goldstone Report on Israel's war crimes to curry favour with the US. Some may be surprised by the revelation that Israel would not even accept the PA's complete abasement, since their military power will ultimately, they calculate, allow them to take every square metre of Palestine. Scottish PSC passed the motion below at our last AGM in 2010. The Palestinians have no allies in their existential struggle among the Arab governments or the governments of the West but the cleansing process begun by the people of Tunisia shows that even the most brutal dictatorships can be torn down by a determined people and a path opened up to genuine democracy and freedom.
The people of the Arab world together with the growing world-wide movement of boycott, divestment and sanctions against Israel can defeat the Zionist project.
Haidar Eid, Professor of Cultural Studies at Al Aqsa University in Gaza and founder of the One Democratic State Group:
"The leaked papers only confirm what we have been saying all along. It is time for the PA to dismantle. The leadership of the PLO and the negotiating team lack legitimacy not unlike the chiefs of the infamous 'bantustans'."
Haifa Zangana, Iraqi author and activist:
"The revelations confirm what the Palestinian resistance has always emphasised, that the more you compromise your just cause and the more you betray your people under the justification of accepting reality, the longer your slavery would last.
Haidar Eid and Haifa Zangana are two of the main speakers at Scottish PSC's conference in Edinburgh this weekend, 29 & 30 Jan.
The impact of the leaked documents and of the changes happening across the Middle East will be discussed at Scottish PSC's conference this weekend: full details
Scottish PSC Resolution passed at 2010 AGM:
Who are we in solidarity with?
This conference notes that every colonising project needs collaborators among the colonised.
This conference further notes & condemns:
- British government support for Abbas in annulling the results of democratic elections
- The role of the PA in suppressing resistance to Israel
- Abbas's silence during much of the massacres in Gaza in January 2009
- The role of the British government and the PA in working to suppress the Goldstone report
This conference declares
1. its solidarity with all those resisting the Israeli occupation of the West Bank and the Golan Heights, siege of Gaza and racist oppression throughout '48-'67 Israel
2. that the legitimacy of our solidarity with the Palestinian people is founded on universal values of justice and human rights.
3. that in the UK, we also have a special responsibility of solidarity deriving from the complicity of British governments with Israel's crimes and their support for the Zionist project of colonisation for many years.
This conference resolves
1. to develop the closest possible links with the Palestinian BDS National Committee (BNC), which represents signatories to the call for BDS, which includes the three main segments of the Palestinian people: in the occupied Palestinian territory; inside Israel; and in exile (mainly the refugee community)
2. to prioritise all calls from the BNC for specific solidarity initiatives
