End the Siege of Gaza Demonstration – August 2008

After only very short notice, over 200 people took to the Edinburgh streets with their demand to End the Siege of Gaza.

A very lively demonstration was interspersed with intelligent and articulate speeches from a range of voices. One was Linda Willis who has recently had to return from the Rafah border ((between Egypt and Gaza) where her partner still remains defiant in their attempt to ensure their vanload of 1.5 tonnes of medicines break the siege.

Many would-be festival-goers swapped the attraction of the jugglers in favour of the opportunity to demonstrate support to the people of Gaza and Palestine.

The recurrent theme of the demo was not sympathy, but active solidarity; and the common call was loudly and clearly BOYCOTT BOYCOTT BOYCOTT!!!

Report from Rafah, Egypt:

Nine women, six men and four children made their way to the Rafah border crossing with the Gaza Strip on Sunday, August 10, to call for the lifting of the siege clamped on the coastal territory.

Harassed by police officers at several checkpoints along the way, the group decided to take back roads just like Palestinians do with Israeli check points in the occupied West Bank.

They had to walk for three kilometers from where their vehicle dropped them off to the Rafah crossing.
