Mike Marqusee spoke to meetings in Edinburgh and E. Renfrewshire on his new book – May 2008
May 6th, 2008
Mike Marqusee spoke to lively SPSC meetings, one large, one modest, on his new book: “If I am not for Myself – Journey of an Anti-Zionist Jew”.
The meeting in Edinburgh was hosted by Edinburgh University Palestine Solidarity Society, held in EU Old College and was chaired by a Palestinian student, Mohammed A.
Mike discussed how, through Zionism, the Jews, who were long the internal victims of the dominant Christian ‘civilisation’, have come to be the Zionist hit-men in the van of the long-established aggression of European and North American powers against the ‘inferior’ dark-skinned majority peoples of the world.
He laid bare the historical processes whereby Zionism came to defeat the opposing forces within the Jewish community who for long kept it as a minority current, and looked at recent developments that might reverse this defeat . Working to win Jews from Zionism is a vital part of solidarity with the Palestinian people, weakens support for Israel across the whole society and can accelerate the campaign for boycott against Israel.
At the SPSC-organised meetings in both East Renfrewshire and Edinburgh, there was genuine dialogue with alternative views of the relationship of Jews to Zionism and the US empire.
