Right to BDS – Scottish Parliament Petition

On Thursday 10th September the Petitions Committee of the Scottish Parliament will consider SPSC’s petition to defend the right to BDS.

We want the Scottish government to state explicitly that we have the right to campaign for BDS and that public bodies in Scotland have the right to implement BDS. The petitions committee could bury it – we need to say that this is important to the people of Scotland.

Please write to the members of the Petitions Committee, especially if you are a constituent, saying that it is important that the petition be supported by the Committee.

In April 2020 Scottish PSC lodged a petition with the Scottish Parliament:

Calling on the Scottish Parliament to urge the Scottish Government to support the right of public bodies and institutions in Scotland to debate, (and where democratically supported) to endorse and implement Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) against foreign countries and those who trade with them.

The Petitions Committee will meet on Thu 10th September to consider the petition and responses received so far:

You can read more about the background to the petition:

The Petitions Committee have not asked Scottish PSC to provide evidence at this meeting and no visitors will be permitted, although the proceedings can be watched live on Parliament TV.

We ask that you email members of the Petitions Committee to express your concerns about attempts by government and pro-Israel groups to intimidate Scottish public institutions, organisations and individuals that support and wish to implement a policy of boycott and divestment from Israel-state sponsored insitutions or complicit corporations.  The Scottish Government needs to do more to ensure that Scottish public institutions, organisations and individuals are free to support BDS without fear of intimidation or prosecution.  We are therefore asking the Petitions Committee to take oral evidence from Scottish PSC and to pursue the matter with the Scottish Government.
