SPSC Statement: Anas al-Sharif among five Al Jazeera journalists killed by Israel in Gaza
The Scottish Palestine Solidarity Campaign (SPSC) condemns in the strongest terms the assassination of Al Jazeera journalists Anas Al-Sharif and Mohammed Qreiqeh, alongside camera operators Ibrahim Zaher, Mohammed Noufal and Moamen Aliwa in a targeted airstrike on Sunday, 10th August.
The journalists were killed in an attack on a tent used by media professionals near Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City during an Israeli bombardment. The horrific attack is part of Israel’s ongoing, systematic campaign to silence Palestinian voices and suppress the truth about its genocidal war on Gaza.

Since 7th October 2023, the genocidal entity has killed over 232 Palestinian journalists and media workers — in the deadliest period for journalists covering conflict in modern history. Each assassination is a direct attack on press freedom and an attempt to prevent the world from witnessing the Israeli atrocities on the Gaza Strip — and the West Bank.
The Israeli military made a statement after the assassination, claiming responsibility for the intentional targeting of Anas. Before he was martyred, Anas was warning about the imminent ground invasion of Gaza City, calling on the world to take action. As the Israeli military prepares to push its genocidal agenda deeper, the assassination of these journalists serves a clear purpose: to ensure there’s no one left to document it.
The targeting of journalists is a war crime. Yet, the unhinged state continues to deliberately execute media workers with total impunity, under the protective silence and biased coverage of the Western Media, including the shameless BBC.
"lsrael's pattern of labelling journalists as militants without providing credible evidence raises serious questions about its intent and respect for press freedom," said CPJ Regional Director Sara Qudah. "Journalists are civilians and must never be targeted. Those responsible for these killings must be held accountable."
We demand an immediate, independent investigation into the killing of all journalists murdered by Israel and full accountability to those responsible.
Strong, diligent action from the Scottish Government is needed:
We are asking them to fulfil their obligations and responsibilities under international law, by taking all measures in their power to refrain from complicity in – and to prevent and punish – the Israeli genocide.
