This webinar is excellent for those wanting to learn more about the situation and events in Palestine long before the Nakba of 1948. The two expert speakers are;firstly Haim Bresheeth,a filmmaker, photographer and scholar of film studies. Secondly Hazem Jamjoum, a Palestinian historian, archivist and educator. These two experts explain the events leading to the Arab revolt beginning in 1936.
The arrogance and brutality of British imperialism as well as the zionist project set the stage for the horror we are witnessing ongoing in 2025 throughout the Middle East but especially in all Occupied Palestine.
This webinar is the perfect companion to the excellent “Palestine 36” film which has been showing at Glasgow Film Theatre over the last 2 weeks. Nevertheless three concerns.
1. Is it really important to go so much into British MOTIVES for enabling Israel? Isn’t there some level where a colonized Palestinian might say, “Whatever their motives (during the Mandate on up to today), what matters is the occupation, that they have colonized and killed us, etc.” Does knowing their motives help fight them? How, exactly?
2. During my research for my book The Rape of Palestine: A Mandate Chronology I came up with a different opinion of the Palestinian leadership (excluding Hajj Amin for now). They were all anti-zionist and, as of the Black Letter of 13 Feb 1931, anti-British (with some exceptions in the Nashashibi party). They went to St. James in early 1939 not at all looking for a deal with Britain as described by Hazem. They demanded one thing and one thing only: immediate independence. All the way up to UNSCOP they were adamant and non-compromising. Even Ghassan Kanafani said that the “upper structure of the
Palestinian national movement… had ultimately, despite its reactionary nature, provided positive leadership during a critical phase of the Palestinian nationalist struggle.” He also said he did “not know of a single Palestinian writer or intellectual in
that period who did not participate in the call for resistance against the colonial enemy.” And certainly Jamal al-Husseini, Musa Alami, George Antonius, Matiel Mogannam, Auni Abdul Hadi, Izzat Darwaza et al. can be counted as writers.
3. Is your view correct, or rather that of ‘Mearsheimer and Walt’? We need to get clear on this. I see much evidence that the combination of Christian zionism and zionist ownership of Western electoral politics means that Israel is the tail wagging the Western dog, rather than Israel being an ‘outpost’ or ‘spearhead’ of imperialism and capitalism. That is, on normal criteria of a Western country’s self-interest they are acting self-sacrificingly for Israel. I am uncertain about this but I do question your view.
