ISRAEL "PRUDENTLY" SHOOTS DOWN AIRLINER
On this day in 1973, Israel fighter jets shot down a Boeing 727 on Libyan Airlines Flight LN114, a regularly scheduled flight from Tripoli to Cairo. The aircraft became lost due to a combination of bad weather and equipment failure. It entered airspace over the Sinai Peninsula (then occupied by Israel) where it was shot down by two Israeli fighter jets. Only five of the 113 people on board survived.
