"BLOOD MAD" BRITISH LEADER IN PALESTINE
On this day in 1938, a local Anglican clergyman protested to General Montgomery about a British Army atrocity at the village of al-Bassa, Palestine, but subsequently reported: “To every question Monty had but one reply: ‘I shall shoot them.’ The man is blood mad.” Montgomery’s own notes while in charge of an infantry division in Palestine decreed that Palestinian guerrillas “must be hunted down relentlessly. When engaged in battle with them, we must shoot to kill.” A statue to Montgomery stands in Whitehall, London.
