SCOTTISH GOVERNMENT (2014) "BOYCOTT RUSSIA BUT NOT ISRAEL"
On this day in 2014, the Scottish government announced it was boycotting, "no longer actively supporting, the UK-Russia Year of Culture", in line with the UK Government’s earlier announcement that "In light of the illegal annexation of Crimea by Russia, [the UK] has withdrawn all ministerial and senior official involvement in the Year of Culture". Government Minister Humza Yousaf had “vowed” two months earlier to oppose any boycott of Israel, although Israel has also illegally annexed parts of a neighbour, Syria.

May 2014: When challenged by pro-Israel individuals at a Glasgow meeting, Scottish Government minister Humza Yousaf said: "You get wiser as you get older and see things from a different perspective...I can give you the Scottish government's vow that it is our policy not to boycott Israel, as we believe in continued dialogue." The Scottish Minister for External Affairs also told guests at Giffnock Synagogue: "Our position on the Middle East doesn't vary much from the UK government. We are committed to a two-state solution along the pre-1967 borders, with Jerusalem as a shared city." (Jewish Telegraph on Friday 16th May 2014)
July 2014: Scottish Government boycotting Russian cultural events in response to the "illegal annexation of Crimea"
In a show of frustration over the ongoing Ukraine conflict, ministers from the U.K. reportedly announced the decision to boycott all events set to be held as part of the UK-Russia "Year of Culture."
The "Year of Culture," which features artistic, sporting, and scientific events, is meant to strengthen ties between the nations, but the recent downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 and ongoing fighting in eastern Ukraine have aggravated international tensions. More than 500 cultural programs and events are set to take place during the course of the year in both Russia and the U.K. Although most of the scheduled events will continue as planned, they will not be attended by U.K. ministers.
"In light of the illegal annexation of Crimea by Russia, Her Majesty's Government has withdrawn all ministerial and senior official involvement in the 'Year of Culture,'" a spokesperson for the British Foreign & Commonwealth Office said in comments carried by The Herald Scotland on Sunday.
A spokesperson for the Scottish government echoed this sentiment, followed the lead of the Tory government in London and announced it was "no longer actively supporting the UK-Russia Year of Culture," according to the newspaper.
