EDINBURGH CITY CANCELLED TALK ON "A JUST PEACE" IN PALESTINE
On this day in 2017, Richard Falk was due to speak in Edinburgh City Chambers on Palestine: The Search for A Just Peace. The Council revoked the room booking for a topic deemed “too controversial”. Falk is Professor Emeritus of international law at Princeton University, the author, co-author, editor or co-editor of 40 volumes. In 2008 Falk was appointed UN Special Rapporteur on "the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territories occupied since 1967”. The meeting went ahead in the Grassmarket Centre.

With no sense of irony, two Edinburgh churches - the Methodist Church on Nicolson Square and St Columba's by the Castle - cancelled bookings by Scottish Palestine Solidarity Campaign for meetings hosting Jackie Walker on the topic of Palestine, Free Speech & Israel’s ‘Black Ops’. It is difficult to know how much these venues were influenced by the 'black ops' work of Sammy Stein, co-chair of the racist group Glasgow Friends of Israel, who contacted venues with the bizarre claim that Walker claims "she is Jewish. This however has been disproved by examination of her birth certificate that shows she has no Jewish blood."
