welcome palestineISRAELI MASS ARRESTS OF VISITORS TO PRISON PALESTINE
On this day in 2011, a group of Scots joined 700 others in the Welcome to Palestine initiative to challenge the siege of the Palestinian West Bank, where Israel prevents many from visiting Palestinians there. Dispensing with cover stories, we stated our wish to travel quietly through Tel Aviv Airport to get to Bethlehem. All of us were thrown into jail, never charged (what could the charge be?) and deported. Unlike Palestinians in Israeli prisons we were not tortured or abused before being pushed onto outgoing aircraft.

في مثل هذا اليوم من عام 2011 ، انضمت مجموعة من الاسكتلنديين إلى 700 آخرين في مبادرة " أهلا بكم في فلسطين “ لتحدي حصار الضفة الغربية الفلسطينية ، حيث تمنع إسرائيل الكثيرين من زيارة الفلسطينيين هناك. تجنبنا المقدمات ، وذكرنا رغبتنا في السفر بهدوء عبر مطار تل أبيب للوصول إلى بيت لحم. تم إلقاءنا جميعاً في السجن ، ولم توجه إلينا أي تهمة (ماذا يمكن أن تكون التهمة؟) وتم ترحيلنا. على عكس معاملتهم للفلسطينيين في السجون الإسرائيلية ، لم يتم تعذيبنا أو إساءة معاملتنا قبل ترحيلنا على متن احد الطائرات المغادرة.

So many rights denied - but even prisoners have a right to visits

Palestinians have globally touted an array of rights that Israel systematically denies. There is the right of return, the right of freedom of movement, the right to water, the right to education, the right to enter (not to be confused with refugees' right to return) and so on.

But the right to receive visitors, or lack thereof? This is the most recent addition. The prohibition on freely receiving foreign visitors is as disturbing as it is shocking, especially for a country that claims to be the only beacon of democracy in the Middle East.
