TORY ANGER AT ISRAELI EMBASSY BOYCOTT BY SCOTTISH GALLERY
On this day in 2014, Tory MSP Jackson Carlaw lodged motion S4M-09879 in the Scottish Parliament criticising “the campaign by the Scottish Palestine Solidarity Campaign (SPSC) against the Stills Gallery in Edinburgh for accepting a donation from the Israeli embassy in London”. The Stills Gallery had returned £1,300 sponsorship to the Israeli Embassy in London and removed the Embassy logo from the promotional material for a three-month photographic exhibition, which SPSC had made plans to protest daily.
The Israeli embassy in London took the issue up with British Culture Minister: "This is an example of the actions of these activists, who often threaten violence and intimidate people who don't agree with them. This is pure blackmail."
Scottish Palestine Solidarity Campaign welcomed the decision by the prestigious Stills Gallery to terminate the Israeli Embassy's sponsorship of their forthcomng photography exhibition after the gallery had returned the Israeli Embassy's £1,300 sponsorship money and removed the Embassy's logo and name from the list of sponsors.
The confirmation of the decision came in a call to SPSC from a Stills Gallery official. SPSC had regretfully confirmed to the Stills Gallery plans to crank up a letter writing campaign to the Gallery and the other sponsors and, if necessary, to mount a sustained protest against Israeli Government involvement every day of the three-month run of the exhibition in the heart of Scotland's capital.
Two artists who had been invited to contribute to the event refused to allow their work to be included as long as the Israeli Embassy was allowed to be a sponsor.
The dishonesty of Jackson Carlaw MSP. In January 2010, Carlaw urged Scots to attend meetings commemorating the Nazi Holocaust, especially those hearing testimony from the dwindling number of survivors. When SPSC invited Carlaw to attend a meeting organised to hear from Auschwitz survivor Dr Hajo Meyer, he responded by claiming he was busy on the days of the speaking tour by a man whose boots he was not fit to lick.
Other Zionist critics join the Tory Party Deputy Leader hurling lies and abuse. Labour MSP Ken McIntosh, [previously] Speaker of the Scottish Parliament, falsely claimed Scottish PSC "target Jewish people living here in Scotland". McIntosh invented an "anti-Semitic leaflet calling for a boycott of kosher food" he claimed to have seen. When challenged by constituents to show evidence of such a criminal offence, he was unable to. (Local police stated that no crime had been committed.)
